Lately, I've been hearing a lot of things that have been going around the Catholic church. They are arguing which ritual is right, which form of praise is the more true way and many other nonsensical claims. Frankly, I found out the answer to all those questions.
When the priest told us that it was incorrect to bow when the priests, lectors and altar boys made their entrance and took their leave, I knew he was right. Did you know that you've already paid compliments to the altar when you genuflected before sitting down and that the priest was doing the same thing when the made his entrance? Therefore, there's no particular need to do it again.
When another priest told me that you shouldn't bless yourself with holy water after mass, he was right again. That's cause you bless yourself with holy water before mass to cleanse yourself before setting foot into the house of God. Therefore, after mass, you are clean and there's no need to bless yourself again.
But why must we bicker about these little issues which add no particular value to our worship or our relationship with God?
Tradition is a fantastic thing which are supposed to add flavour and colour to our religion. However, we are stuck in it, just like the pharisees were 2000 years ago.
The next time somebody tells you that you should bow/kneel/pray in a certain way, tell them that they shouldn't question the motion, instead, ask for the notion. Bickering about the way we do things makes us 'phariseetical'. Instead, tell them that the way that you bow/kneel/pray improves your relationship with God, not because you want to follow tradition blindly.
